Pakistan Scores Legal Win As Court Rejects India’s Bid To Halt Indus Waters Treaty

Indus Waters Treaty

In a significant diplomatic victory, the Permanent Court of Arbitration has ruled in Pakistan’s favor, dismissing India’s attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and halt ongoing arbitration. The decision confirms that neither country can unilaterally terminate the treaty or withdraw from its obligations without mutual agreement.

India had tried to stop the tribunal from hearing Pakistan’s objections over its hydroelectric projects on the western rivers—projects Pakistan has challenged since 2016. The court firmly rejected India’s objections, stating that the arbitration must proceed as outlined in the treaty’s binding dispute resolution mechanism.

Calling the ruling a “major diplomatic achievement,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said it validates Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to the treaty and readiness for meaningful dialogue with India on broader issues, including Kashmir and terrorism.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office accused India of “water aggression” and warned that attempts to bypass legal processes threaten regional stability. The ruling ensures that the court will continue reviewing the legality of India’s river projects under the treaty framework.
