Pakistan to Discontinue Rs. 5000 Currency Note on Sept 30?

A fake notification from the Finance Division has been circulating on social media, falsely claiming that the Pakistani government intends to discontinue the Rs5,000 currency note from September 30, 2023. This fake notification has caused panic among the public.

The bogus notification suggests that the government is implementing this policy change to strengthen the financial system and combat illicit financial activities. It specifies that from September 30, 2023, the use, possession, and circulation of Rs5,000 currency notes will be prohibited in Pakistan.

However, experts have pointed out several red flags that indicate the notification is a forgery. There is no Deputy Secretary R-III in the Internal Finance Wing, and the font size and style in the fake notification differ from official government notifications. Additionally, no official statement has been released by the Ministry of Finance or the State Bank of Pakistan regarding such a policy change.

Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi has confirmed that the notification is fake and has urged the government to take action against those spreading false news to create chaos. As a result, the Rs5,000 currency note will continue to be in circulation in Pakistan.
