Preparations are in progress for Pakistan’s first high-speed rail project, with a proposal for a Lahore-to-Rawalpindi link submitted to the Punjab chief minister for approval.
The project, with an estimated cost of $1.6 billion, has been developed by the departments of transport and mass transit.

According to the proposal, the high-speed rail will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, cutting the travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to under two hours.
The proposal stresses the need for an action plan, taking into account a pre-feasibility study conducted by the railway department, which will be funded by the Department of Planning and Development. However, obtaining the necessary initial funding for this ambitious project remains a significant hurdle.
If greenlit, the high-speed rail will mark a significant advancement in Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure, offering a rapid and efficient travel solution between two of the country’s major cities.
