Pakistan to Supply Additional Electricity to Foreign Countries During Winter

Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to the timely execution of the CASA-1000 power transmission project, describing it as a cornerstone for enhancing regional energy collaboration and integration.

Joining the Intergovernmental Council meeting of the CASA-1000 initiative virtually, Leghari emphasized that Pakistan is prepared to supply surplus electricity to partner nations during the winter through the CASA-1000 grid, which links the energy networks of Central and South Asia.

He stated that the project goes beyond electricity exchange—it serves as a conduit for regional peace, development, and cooperation. Stressing its broader strategic relevance, Leghari highlighted its role in fostering unity between the two regions.

Referring to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s agenda of energy sector reforms, the minister pointed out that completing CASA-1000 on schedule is a key government priority, in line with its vision for sustainable development and regional energy security.

Leghari expressed concern over delays in the project’s progress and called on the World Bank to address the financial challenges caused by these setbacks. He also proposed initiating technical-level discussions on “Reverse Power,” a mechanism that would allow South Asia to transmit power to Central Asia during periods of surplus.

Despite facing logistical and financial challenges due to delays, Pakistan has ensured the safety and maintenance of essential infrastructure, Leghari noted. He said that Reverse Power trade could enhance energy cooperation and enable Pakistan to export its excess electricity to energy-deficient Central Asian nations.

He concluded by affirming that CASA-1000 has the potential to reshape regional energy dynamics, making it a critical step toward energy security and economic integration across Central and South Asia.
