PM Shehbaz Applauds Trump’s Mediation in India-Pakistan Ceasefire

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during a ceremony at the US Embassy in Islamabad on Wednesday to commemorate the 249th Independence Day of the United States, extended his congratulations to the American people and praised President Donald Trump’s contributions to global peace. He particularly acknowledged Trump’s support in facilitating a ceasefire, describing him as an advocate for peace and economic collaboration.

The prime minister emphasized the growing strength of Pakistan-US relations, noting that both nations are now entering a new chapter based on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and adherence to the rule of law.

Reflecting on the historical partnership, PM Shehbaz highlighted that the United States was one of the earliest countries to recognize Pakistan after its independence. Over the decades, the two nations have maintained a robust relationship, marked by various collaborative projects that have played a significant role in Pakistan’s social and economic progress.

Addressing the issue of terrorism, he recalled Pakistan’s frontline role in the global war on terror after the 9/11 attacks. By 2018, he said, Pakistan had successfully dismantled terrorist networks on its soil—though at a tremendous cost. The country suffered over 90,000 casualties and incurred economic losses exceeding $150 billion.

“Our sacrifices in combating terrorism are unmatched,” he stated. “We have now redirected our focus towards economic development and remain committed to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity.”

Turning to regional matters, PM Shehbaz denounced the Pahalgam incident as a staged operation. He criticized India for hurling baseless accusations rather than accepting Pakistan’s proposal for an impartial international investigation.

“Instead of agreeing to a fair probe, India chose to respond with aggression. In the face of provocation, Pakistan showed maximum restraint. However, in an act of self-defense, we managed to bring down six Indian fighter jets,” he added.

He concluded by recognizing the United States’ diplomatic efforts to calm tensions during that volatile period. “Our American partners played a constructive role during that critical moment. The ceasefire was a crucial move toward peace and stability, and President Trump’s role in that process deserves special recognition,” the premier said.
