PM Shehbaz Sharif Addresses UNGA, Highlights Palestine and Kashmir Concerns

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to address the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Friday, focusing on the enduring disputes over Palestine and Kashmir. According to a statement from the Foreign Office, Sharif will urge the UN to resolve these critical issues, which have remained on the UN Security Council’s agenda for years.

He is expected to call for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and highlight Pakistan’s support for the UN’s role in fostering global peace, security, and prosperity.

In his address, Sharif will emphasize Pakistan’s dedication to collaborating with all UN member states to uphold the UN Charter, prevent conflicts, foster peace, and promote global prosperity.

As an incoming member of the UN Security Council for 2025-26, he will reiterate Pakistan’s intention to actively engage in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts.

The prime minister will also tackle a range of pressing topics, including the effects of climate change, Pakistan’s ongoing battle against terrorism, and the financial challenges facing debt-ridden nations. Additionally, he will draw attention to India’s occupation of Kashmir and condemn the actions of Israeli forces, which he characterizes as “genocide” against the Palestinian people.

Sharif’s address will precede speeches by other world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose government’s actions in Gaza and ongoing tensions with Lebanon have garnered significant international scrutiny. Netanyahu is scheduled to speak immediately after Sharif. The agenda also includes Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, who is expected to discuss plans for fresh elections following the recent ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
