Pollen Allergy Cases Surge in Abbottabad Amid Poplar Tree Concerns

A spike in pollen allergy cases has been reported across Abbottabad, with Poplar trees identified as the main culprit. The cotton-like white pollen released by these trees is causing widespread respiratory issues, especially in densely populated areas such as Link Road, Mandian, Supply, and Sir Syed Colony.

Hospitals like the DHQ Hospital are receiving up to 15 patients daily, while numbers are reportedly even higher at Ayub Teaching Hospital. Common symptoms include sneezing, itching, and breathing trouble, particularly among asthma sufferers.

Dr Sabir Rehman from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa TB Control Program noted that nearly half of the Poplar trees in public areas have been removed. However, many still remain on private lands. He stressed the need for cooperation from private landowners and recommended trimming trees before spring as a more sustainable approach to control pollen spread.

While recent rainfall has brought temporary relief by settling pollen, authorities continue to monitor the situation. Experts are also urging for increased public awareness and allergy-sensitive urban planning to prevent future outbreaks.
