Rawalpindi: A public holiday has been declared in Rawalpindi due to heavy rainfall and worsening weather conditions.
The district administration announced the decision after continuous rain caused major disruptions in the city. Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema issued the notification of the holiday. He urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel for safety.
The decision came after the city received over 200 millimeters of rain, raising concerns about public safety and mobility. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also forecast further rain in the coming hours.
According to officials, drainage and emergency operations are currently underway. Rescue teams have been deployed throughout the city to address water accumulation and any potential emergencies that may arise.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner had warned residents to stay inside for the next few hours as rain continued. He assured that government departments were fully active in managing the situation.
The public holiday announced in Rawalpindi is part of precautionary steps to prevent accidents and allow authorities to carry out relief work efficiently.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has also caused serious damage in Faisalabad. At least 11 people have died, and over 20 have been injured in incidents linked to roof collapses over the past two days. Victims include several family members, such as a husband and wife, a mother and daughter, and two brothers.
One of the most tragic incidents occurred in G Block, Allama Iqbal Colony. The roof of a house collapsed, killing two young brothers—17-year-old Muhammad and 11-year-old Musab Hussain. Their parents and sister were injured and are receiving treatment.
The authorities have advised the public to stay alert and follow safety instructions during the ongoing weather emergency. Rescue and emergency teams remain active in affected areas, ensuring timely support.
The public holiday announced in Rawalpindi reflects the seriousness of the situation and the government’s efforts to minimize risk to citizens. As the rains continue, the administration is closely monitoring the conditions and may issue further advisories as needed.
