Punjab Lifts Wheat Movement Ban, Opens Market for Farmers

In a landmark move aimed at empowering farmers, the Punjab government has removed all restrictions on the transportation of wheat within and beyond the province. The decision allows for the free movement of wheat across inter-provincial borders without the need for special permits.

The policy shift is expected to benefit farmers significantly by giving them access to broader markets and better pricing for their crops. With fewer bureaucratic hurdles, farmers can now sell their wheat more freely and at competitive rates.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has endorsed a deregulated, open-market approach to wheat procurement. For the first time in Punjab’s history, the private sector will participate in wheat buying—ending the longstanding monopoly of government agencies.

The move is being welcomed by agricultural groups and stakeholders, who say it could lead to fairer pricing and reduce exploitation in the supply chain.
