From Lahore to Yokohama Maryam Nawaz Sets Sights on Japanese-Style Development for Punjab Cities

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is currently on a five-day official visit to Japan, focusing on urban development and modernization projects.

During her trip to Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city, Maryam Nawaz explored advanced urban planning, environmental sustainability, and industrial development strategies. The city is known for its cutting-edge infrastructure, efficient waste management, high-speed rail, and green energy solutions.

Speaking at Yokohama Port, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized her vision to transform Lahore and other cities in Punjab on the model of Yokohama. She highlighted the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) as a key initiative in this modernization effort.

“We want to develop Lahore, located on the banks of the Ravi River, as a modern city similar to Yokohama,” Maryam said while briefing Japanese officials. She also invited the Yokohama Urban Development Authority to visit Lahore for collaboration on urban renewal projects.

This visit marks the first time a Punjab chief minister has been officially invited to Japan. The delegation received detailed briefings on Japan’s urban development systems and expressed commitment to adopting these technologies in Punjab.

Officials believe that adopting Japanese urban planning models could improve infrastructure, public services, and environmental sustainability in Punjab. The Chief Minister’s visit is seen as a step toward fostering international cooperation and learning from global best practices.

With these initiatives, Maryam Nawaz aims to modernize Punjab’s cities, making them more sustainable, efficient, and competitive on a global scale.
