Punjab will hold “Namaz-e-Istisqa” (prayer for rain) on November 15 to address the ongoing smog crisis that has severely affected the region.
The prayer, which involves collective repentance and a request for divine intervention, will take place across the province, as announced by the Department of Religious Affairs. It is hoped to bring rain, which is desperately needed to reduce the impact of the persistent smog.

The thick haze has worsened air quality, with Lahore recently ranked as one of the most polluted cities globally. The smog has caused serious health issues and disrupted daily life. Although the Department of Meteorology predicts that strong winds and thunderstorms may provide some relief, rainfall in Lahore and nearby areas is expected to be limited.
The prayer, typically held during droughts, is a collective plea for mercy and rain to alleviate the dry spell. It will be performed in open spaces, hoping to invoke divine mercy and reduce the smog’s harmful effects.
Lahore, ranked as the world’s second most polluted city, follows Delhi, which topped the pollution charts. The air quality index in Lahore reached 644, while Delhi’s AQI soared to 1,267.
Multan, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar are also experiencing high pollution levels, with visibility severely reduced due to smog and fog, leading to road closures. Several motorway sections, including the M2, M3, M4, and M5, have been closed for public safety.
Experts attribute the dense smog to climate change, urging immediate action to mitigate its health impacts. In response, the Punjab government has extended school closures in 36 districts for five days and encouraged online classes, while also reducing attendance at government offices.
