Punjab Govt Launches Recycling Program: Earn Rs1,000 for Depositing Plastic Bottles in Lahore

As part of the Chief Minister’s Green Credits Programme, the Punjab government has signed an agreement with a private company to recycle single-use plastic waste.

The company will begin installing recycling machines next month at four major universities in Lahore. These locally manufactured machines, developed using Chinese technology, will also be placed in busy markets and shopping centers throughout the city.

Each machine will have two buttons—Button A to deposit plastic bottles and Button B to confirm after entering your phone number. Once completed, the screen will show the green credits earned, which can also be tracked using a dedicated mobile app.

Company chairman Gulfam Abid stated that Lahore produces nearly 500 tons of plastic bottle waste daily. These machines aim to collect and recycle the plastic, which will then be converted into useful construction materials such as pavement blocks, road repair material, and bricks.

He explained that inserting 20 large (1.5-liter) bottles or 40 small (0.5-liter) bottles into the machine would instantly reward the user with Rs1,000 in cash.

The initiative is expected to benefit not just everyday citizens, but also over 18,000 scrap collectors in Lahore. These workers can use the mobile app to schedule bottle pickups, and the company will collect the materials directly from them in exchange for cash payments.
