Punjab Reduces Bus and Rail Fares by 5% After Fuel Price Drop

The Punjab Transport Department has announced a 5% reduction in bus and rail fares across the province. The decision comes after a recent cut in petroleum prices, aimed at lowering travel costs for passengers and ensuring transparency at terminals.

According to officials, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has directed all bus terminals to enforce the new fares immediately. Updated fare lists must be displayed so commuters are clearly informed of the revised prices. The reduction follows a Rs12.84 per liter drop in diesel prices on Friday night, which prompted transport authorities to adjust ticket costs.

Fares reduced on major routes

The revised fares apply to several major intercity routes:

  • Lahore to Sargodha: Reduced by Rs50, now Rs1,060
  • Lahore to Islamabad: Reduced by Rs100, now Rs1,950
  • Lahore to Peshawar: Reduced by Rs120, now Rs2,380
  • Lahore to Rahim Yar Khan: Reduced by Rs140, now Rs2,810
  • Lahore to Hyderabad: Reduced by Rs300, now Rs5,800
  • Lahore to Karachi (Rail): Reduced by Rs320, now Rs6,040

These changes are expected to provide relief to thousands of daily commuters who have been struggling with rising living costs.

Implementation and monitoring

The RTA secretary confirmed that strict checks are underway to ensure transporters comply with the revised fares. Officials have been deployed at major bus stands to oversee implementation. He added, “We are in touch with transporters, and all new fares will be effective from today.”

The move has been welcomed by passengers who had been anticipating a reduction following the decrease in petroleum prices. Authorities believe this decision will not only help commuters but also ensure a fair balance between fuel adjustments and public transport costs.

With the new fare structure now in place, the Punjab Transport Department has emphasized that no transporter will be allowed to overcharge passengers. Continuous monitoring will ensure that the revised fares are strictly followed.
