Saudi Arabia Issues Warning to Pakistan Over Increasing Begging Issues

Saudi Arabia has expressed significant concerns to Pakistan regarding the increasing number of Pakistani citizens entering the kingdom on Umrah visas and engaging in begging.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has voiced its frustration over this escalating problem, stating that it undermines the sanctity of the religious pilgrimage and contravenes local laws.

Saudi officials have warned that if this trend continues, they may enforce stricter visa regulations or even limit travel for Pakistani pilgrims, impacting many who genuinely wish to perform Umrah. This has become a critical issue for Pakistan.

In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has suggested implementing an “Umrah Act” to regulate the activities of travel agencies facilitating Umrah, ensuring adherence to ethical standards.

The government is also working with agencies like the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to dismantle organized groups that send individuals to Saudi Arabia under the pretense of religious pilgrimage, only for them to beg.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently met with the Saudi ambassador to address the situation and reassure Saudi authorities of Pakistan’s commitment to resolving the issue. The FIA has been instructed to take prompt action against those exploiting the pilgrimage system.
