Senate Rejects Bill Proposing Public Hanging

The upper house of parliament has rejected a bill proposing public execution as a deterrent for sex offenders and rapists. Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of the JI introduced the bill during the Senate’s farewell session, citing the alarming number of reported rape cases. However, the proposal faced opposition, with 24 members voting against it, leading to the rejection of the motion for approval.

Supporters of the bill argued that public executions would serve as an effective deterrent, citing practices in other countries like the United States and Saudi Arabia. PTI’s Senator Humayun Mohmand supported public hanging, suggesting that countries with such practices experience lower crime rates. However, opponents, including PPP’s Senator Sherry Rehman and PML-N’s Senator Irfan Siddiqui, expressed concerns about the barbaric nature of public executions and emphasized the need for improving the justice system.

In the vote conducted by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, 14 members voted in favor, while 24 members voted against the bill, leading to its rejection. Additionally, during the session, PTI members protested against alleged election rigging, surrounding the chairman’s dais. The protest concluded with assurances from the chairman for a detailed discussion on alleged election rigging in the following session.
