Sharp Rise in Family Disputes Reported in Rawalpindi Courts

Family courts in Rawalpindi witnessed a record-breaking 1,451 new cases in the first quarter of 2025, signaling a sharp rise in domestic disputes. From January to March, cases ranged from alimony and child custody battles to issues over dowry and dower (Haq Mehr). The surge highlights changing social dynamics and growing challenges in maintaining marital relationships.

Among the notable shifts, 21 Christian women filed for divorce for the first time under reformed laws that now allow them to bypass the previously complicated annulment process. Additionally, 41 husbands requested court intervention to bring back estranged wives, while 106 women were granted divorce through khula.

Courts ordered 310 men to provide financial support to their families, reunited 13 couples, and transferred custody of 75 children from fathers to mothers. Despite the growing disputes, courts also succeeded in reconciling 55 couples, showcasing efforts to preserve family units where possible.

Lawyers attribute the trend to social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, which they say are contributing to mistrust and elopements. Advocates have recommended stronger vetting of prospective spouses and legal reforms to discourage impulsive love marriages, including minimum dower and maintenance requirements.
