Sindh Forensic DNA Lab Gains Global Recognition with ISO Certification

The Sindh Forensic DNA Laboratory has made a significant achievement by becoming the first forensic lab in Pakistan to receive ISO certification, marking its recognition at the global level. Established in 2018 at the University of Karachi through a collaboration between the Sindh government and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), the lab has handled 8,500 DNA cases, covering a wide range of accidents, incidents, and crimes.

Recently, the lab earned accreditation from the Pakistan Scientific Accreditation Council under the internationally recognized ISO 17025 standard, which is based on a third-party audit. This certification was renewed following an annual performance audit, further solidifying the lab’s credibility and operational standards.

Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, in-charge of the DNA Laboratory, expressed pride in achieving this certification, emphasizing that it underscores the lab’s commitment to maintaining high-quality forensic practices. The lab’s work in high-profile cases, such as the Diya Bhel murder case, has also garnered attention. In this particular case, the lab’s investigation dispelled false propaganda from Indian media, which had wrongly claimed that Pakistan’s Hindu minority was unsafe.

This recognition not only highlights the lab’s expertise but also showcases Pakistan’s growing capabilities in forensic science on the global stage.
