Independence Day celebrations in Karachi took a tragic turn as aerial firing claimed three lives, including an 8-year-old girl, and injured 84 others. Many of the victims were women and children.
Eight-year-old Marha, a first-grade student, was struck by a stray bullet while standing near a window. Two other people lost their lives in separate aerial firing incidents in Korangi and Lyari’s Agra Taj area.
The injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed, Civil, and Jinnah hospitals for immediate medical care. Rescue teams worked quickly to provide treatment for the victims, many of whom suffered serious injuries.
Police launched operations across Karachi following the incidents. Twenty suspects involved in aerial firing were initially arrested, and weapons were recovered from their possession.
Inspector General of Sindh Police Ghulam Nabi Memon expressed deep regret over the loss of lives. He urged citizens to refrain from aerial firing during Independence Day celebrations, emphasizing that it should not be part of festivities.
“The purpose of Independence Day is to celebrate our nation peacefully, not to endanger lives,” the IG said. He confirmed that police are taking strict action under the law.
In total, 57 people have been arrested, and an equal number of weapons were seized. Cases of attempted murder have been registered against the suspects, who will face legal proceedings in accordance with Pakistani law.
Authorities have warned that further incidents of aerial firing will be dealt with strictly. They also encouraged citizens to report anyone engaging in such dangerous acts to prevent future tragedies.
The Karachi police and Sindh administration are now working together to ensure that upcoming public celebrations remain safe and free from violence caused by reckless gunfire.
