Electricity Price in Karachi May Drop by Rs6.62 Per Unit

Electricity prices for consumers in Karachi are anticipated to drop by Rs6.62 per unit due to fuel cost adjustment. K-Electric has filed an application with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which will hold a hearing on the matter on April 16.

In addition, K-Electric has submitted a petition requesting NEPRA’s approval for the fuel cost adjustment covering the period from July 2023 to February 2025. The company mentioned that Rs13.9 billion worth of fuel cost adjustments are still pending.

NEPRA has indicated that the hearing will examine the implementation of K-Electric’s merit order in response to the petition.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reduction in electricity rates during a special event in Islamabad. The price for domestic consumers has been decreased by Rs7.41 per unit, while industrial users will benefit from a Rs7.69 per unit reduction.

This price cut is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce financial burdens on the public and foster industrial growth during difficult economic times. The move is expected to bring significant relief to households struggling with high electricity costs, particularly during the upcoming summer season, and provide support to industries dealing with escalating production costs.

The government emphasized that the reduction in electricity rates would make essential services more affordable and contribute to economic stability.
