Karachi Heatwave Warning: Temperatures Expected to Reach 40°C

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Karachi starting Sunday, with temperatures expected to rise to 40°C, about 4 to 6 degrees higher than the usual daytime average for this time of year.

A senior meteorologist explained that the temperature increase is due to a shift in the atmospheric pressure system over Sindh. As the high-pressure area moves away from the upper and central regions of Sindh, the sea breeze is expected to cease, causing the heat intensity in Karachi to spike.

While the heatwave is set to affect Karachi from Sunday, the weather system’s movement towards southern Sindh will provide relief to other parts of the province starting Saturday.

The Met Office has issued guidelines advising residents, particularly children, women, and the elderly, to stay out of the sun, drink plenty of water, and take necessary precautions during this hot spell.

On Friday, Karachi recorded a maximum temperature of 34.3°C, and Saturday’s forecast predicts temperatures between 36°C and 38°C with hot and humid conditions. Meanwhile, several cities in the interior of Sindh continued to experience intense heat, with Dadu and Shaheed Benazirabad reaching 46.5°C, followed by Padidan at 46°C. Other cities such as Larkana (45.6°C), Mohenjo Daro and Khairpur (45.5°C), Sukkur and Rohri (45°C), Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas (42°C), and Badin (39°C) also faced extreme temperatures.
