Sindh Unveils Long-Term Strategy to Address Power Crisis

The Sindh government has introduced a long-term strategy to tackle the ongoing electricity crisis, setting it apart from Punjab’s recently announced short-term power relief package.

Sindh Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah highlighted the province’s dedication to sustainable solutions for residents burdened by rising electricity costs.

Shah mentioned that, unlike temporary measures, Sindh’s approach includes distributing 200,000 solar panels, with an additional 500,000 to be provided in the coming month.

This announcement follows Punjab’s decision to offer a Rs. 14 per unit electricity subsidy for two months, which has drawn scrutiny from the IMF. The IMF has imposed new conditions on Pakistan, including ending Punjab’s subsidy by September 30th and restricting new subsidies during the ongoing 37-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program.

These IMF conditions have cast doubt on Punjab’s Rs. 700 billion solar panel distribution plan, which now faces challenges amid intensified negotiations, threatening its future implementation.
