The government establishes a fact-finding committee to investigate the management of the Faizabad sit-in.

The federal government in Islamabad informed the Supreme Court on Friday about the establishment of a fact-finding committee to investigate the “role and directions” of all “concerned” officials involved in managing and handling the Faizabad sit-in.

Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan submitted an implementation report to the apex court, stating that the committee was set up in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision dated February 6, 2019.

The committee, consisting of senior officials from interior and defense ministries and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), will collect evidence related to the sit-in, review all relevant documents, record witness statements, and assess the issue based on applicable laws and regulations.

The committee will determine the individuals responsible for managing the sit-in and submit a report with recommendations to the Ministry of Defense by December 1.

If additional time is required, the committee will request an extension from the defense ministry. The Faizabad sit-in case originated from protests staged in November 2017 against a change in the finality-of-Prophethood oath in the Elections Act 2017.

The Supreme Court had previously recommended strict legal action against those issuing harmful edicts and ruled that intelligence agencies must not exceed their mandates.
