World Bank Delegation to Review Tarbela Dam Expansion and $40 Billion Investment

A high-profile delegation from the World Bank is set to visit the Tarbela Dam to assess the ongoing expansion work. The delegation, consisting of 9 Executive Directors, has already met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other top officials to discuss development initiatives. This visit marks the first time in 20 years that World Bank Executive Directors have come to Pakistan.

The delegation is scheduled to meet with key government figures, including Pakistan’s Finance Minister, Minister for Economic Affairs, Minister for Planning, and Minister for Energy. These discussions will revolve around the effective utilization of $40 billion in funding, part of the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework, which aims to boost Pakistan’s infrastructure and economic development.

As part of their visit, the delegation will tour the Tarbela Lake and Power Station to review the progress of the dam’s expansion. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his gratitude for the World Bank’s $40 billion investment in Pakistan, calling it a significant step in the country’s long-standing partnership with the global financial institution. He also acknowledged the World Bank’s role in supporting Pakistan during the 2022 floods, which had a devastating impact on the country.

The World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework is expected to play a vital role in Pakistan’s future development, providing key investments across various sectors, from energy to infrastructure.
