Pakistan's population exceeds 241 million, growing by 2.55% annually

The recent digital census approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) reveals that Pakistan’s population has reached 241.49 million, growing at a rate of 2.55 percent annually. The CCI meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, attended by chief ministers of all provinces, approved the census results.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Punjab has the highest population with 127.68 million, followed by Sindh with 55.69 million. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has a population of 40.85 million, Balochistan has 14.89 million, and Islamabad stands at 2.36 million.

Comparing with the 1998 census data, the country’s population was 132.35 million, which increased to 207.68 million in 2017. The growth rate declined from 2.69 in 1998 to 2.40 in 2017 but has now risen to 2.55 as per the latest census.

The data reveals that 61.18 percent of Pakistan’s population resides in rural areas, while the urban population constitutes 38.82 percent. In KP, 84.99 percent of people live in rural areas, 69.04 percent in Balochistan, 59.30 percent in Punjab, 46.27 percent in Sindh, and 53.10 percent in Islamabad.
