Parliament set to dissolve today

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is poised to dissolve the National Assembly today, formally communicating this decision to President Arif Alvi. Subsequently, a new interim government, led by technocrats, will assume control of the nation, addressing its prevailing political and economic challenges.

The ruling alliance of the PDM is approaching its last days and has chosen to dissolve the lower parliamentary house ahead of schedule, with the intention of extending the election timeline. While the early dissolution grants a 90-day window for elections, the Interior Minister has indicated the possibility of postponing the elections until March 2024.

In accordance with Article 58 of the Constitution, the Prime Minister advises the President, who must grant approval; failure to do so results in the automatic dissolution of the assembly within 48 hours.

This article stipulates, ‘The president shall dissolve the National Assembly if so advised by the prime minister; and the National Assembly shall, unless sooner dissolved, stand dissolved at the expiration of forty-eight hours after the prime minister has so advised.’

Previously, the Prime Minister and government officials stated that they had not yet finalized a candidate for the caretaker Prime Minister position, with the decision expected to be collectively determined through consultations.
