PML-N Disregards Senate Resolution, Affirms Election Schedule

A day after the Senate resolution caused a stir by proposing a delay in elections, Marriyum Aurangzeb, the Information Secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), affirmed that elections in the country will proceed as scheduled, regardless of the resolution’s origin.

Speaking to the media after appearing before an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Marriyum, a former information minister, stated that the PML-N was the sole party opposing the resolution.

“Regardless of other parties crying or shouting, elections will take place on February 8,” asserted Marriyum. She went on to claim that the resolution was orchestrated by the PML-N’s rival, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

According to Marriyum, the PTI implemented a strategic plan by first approaching the Lahore High Court (LHC) and subsequently introducing the resolution in the Senate.

She criticized the PTI for maintaining silence within the assembly and creating a commotion outside. In a veiled reference to Imran Khan, the founding chairman of the PTI, Marriyum cautioned against issuing threats from jail, stating that the people of Pakistan would not support such actions.

Marriyum emphasized that the Pakistani people desire elections and revealed that the PML-N’s schedule for public gatherings would be decided in the coming week.

Her remarks centered on the non-binding resolution passed by the Senate, which proposed a postponement of the general elections. Senator Dilawar Khan, an independent lawmaker, presented the resolution in the upper house, gaining approval in the presence of 14 senators out of 100. Notably, PTI’s Senator Gurdeep Singh and PPP’s Behramand Tangi abstained from voting, leading to an indefinite adjournment of the session. Subsequently, both lawmakers received notices from their respective parties for their conduct during the session.
