Constitutional Amendment Delayed as Govt Fails to Satisfy Fazl ur Rehman

The constitutional amendment bill has been delayed again as the government failed to win over JUI chief Fazlur Rehman. Sources indicate the bill will be presented in the National Assembly in 10-12 days, as the ruling alliance struggles to gain Rehman’s support for establishing a constitutional court and other amendments.

Fazlur Rehman has taken a firm stance, saying these amendments cannot be rushed and has requested time to reconsider the Judicial Commission’s reformation. Meanwhile, the government claims it can pass the bill without PTI’s support.

Although the bill has been under discussion for a long time, sources suggest Rehman has reversed his earlier position. JUI-F had previously advised delaying judiciary-related clauses in the amendments.

A meeting between government and opposition leaders with Rehman and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari followed, where Rehman emphasized that his party had not yet received the draft of the proposed amendments and urged the government to proceed carefully.
