President Arif Alvi Announces No January Elections During ‘Capital Talk’ Interview with Hamid Mir

President Dr. Arif Alvi expressed his skepticism about the general elections taking place in January next year, raising concerns over whether Pakistan will be ready for the polls. He emphasized the importance of conducting transparent elections when they eventually occur.

Alvi’s statements align with concerns raised by political analysts regarding a possible delay in the elections beyond January. Some analysts have pointed out that no political party seems to be actively in “election mode,” and there have been cautions about the potentially harsh weather conditions during winter that could disrupt the polling process.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had previously announced that the general elections would be held in the last week of January 2024 but did not specify an exact date, leading to concerns about a potential delay.

The president stressed the need for free and fair elections, stating that they are essential for Pakistan’s development and emphasizing the importance of a level playing field for all parties.

Alvi also reaffirmed his allegiance to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its chairman, Imran Khan, whom he considers his leader. He defended Khan’s honesty in financial matters and described him as a patriotic Pakistani.

Regarding the reference filed against Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa during the previous PTI government, Alvi clarified that he had nothing to do with it and merely forwarded the reference received from the Prime Minister’s Office. He praised Justice Isa for forming Supreme Court benches transparently.

The PTI welcomed Alvi’s remarks on transparent elections, emphasizing the significance of the public mandate and the importance of a level playing field for all political stakeholders.

President Alvi’s comments reflect the uncertainty surrounding the timing and conduct of the upcoming general elections and the need for transparency in the electoral process.

The president also reaffirmed his support for the PTI and Imran Khan and distanced himself from any involvement in the reference against Chief Justice Isa.
