PTI Founder Ruled Out For NA-122 Election Candidacy

Lahore High Court’s appellate tribunal rejects Imran Khan’s appeal against the rejection of his NA-122 nomination papers by the returning officer, Justice Tariq Nadeem upholds the decision. The rejection occurred on December 30, 2023, for both the Lahore and Mianwali constituencies. This decision aligns with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s rejection of Imran Khan’s nomination papers for NA 122 (Lahore) and NA-89 (Mianwali) due to his conviction in the Toshakhana case, leading to a five-year disqualification under Article 63/1-F for corrupt practices.

The returning officer, in a detailed verdict, cited objections by PML-N’s Mian Naseer as valid and logical, highlighting discrepancies in the seconder and proposer’s affiliation with NA-122.

This development transpired on the deadline day for appeals concerning the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers for the upcoming February 8 general elections. The decision reinforces Imran Khan’s ineligibility to contest in these constituencies, given the upheld rejection of his nomination papers.

In parallel, the Election Commission of Pakistan allotted election symbols to various political parties on January 13, including PML-N retaining the ‘lion’ symbol and PPPP receiving the ‘arrow’ symbol. Independent candidates, numbering 177, were also assigned symbols for the upcoming general election. The symbols were allocated to parties such as PTI Nazriati, PTI-P, MLJ, PPP, IPP, JUI, JI, BNP, PAP, TLP, among others. With the election symbols designated, preparations for the February 8 polls are underway, marking a significant step in the electoral process.
