Gold Worth Millions Seized in Smuggling Attempt at Karachi Airport

Pakistan Customs recently foiled an attempt to smuggle gold worth Rs170 million at Karachi airport. A family traveling to South Africa via Dubai was apprehended during luggage scanning, with nine kilograms of gold discovered concealed within their luggage. The six-member family, including five females, was detained following the discovery of the contraband.

This incident comes after an arrest on April 5, when authorities at Multan airport apprehended an individual attempting to smuggle approximately 16 kilograms of gold out of the country. Muhammad Tanveer, en route to Dubai, was found with the gold in his luggage, which was flagged for inspection due to his frequent travels.

In a similar incident last April, Customs officials intercepted an attempt to smuggle foreign currency at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. Approximately 65,000 US dollars, equivalent to around Rs12 million, were seized from the baggage of a female passenger traveling to Doha. While the currency was confiscated, the passenger was allowed to board the flight.
