Repeat Desecration of Holy Quran Sparks Global Outcry in Sweden

A renewed wave of global concern has surged following a deeply troubling incident in Stockholm, Sweden, where the Holy Quran faced yet another instance of public disrespect. Salwan Momika, 37, and Salwan Najem, 48, deliberately set pages of the Quran ablaze while spewing Islamophobic rhetoric in front of Stockholm’s Royal Palace. This act marked a repeat offense, as they had previously committed a similar act a few weeks earlier. Despite earnest efforts by Muslims to intervene, the Swedish Police invoked freedom of speech to allow the demonstration to persist.

Salwan Momika, an Iraqi Christian refugee residing in Sweden, had previously ignited a Quran on Eid al-Adha outside the Stockholm Mosque. His subsequent protest near the Iraqi embassy further strained diplomatic ties and drew international condemnation. These distressing incidents epitomize an unsettling surge in Islamophobic actions across Northern European nations, often orchestrated by anti-Muslim entities.

Sweden’s decision to grant permits for such acts has exacerbated diplomatic tensions, prompting reactions from nations like Türkiye. They call for a reconsideration of actions that seem to target Islam under the pretext of freedom of expression. Both the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union (EU) have united in expressing their objections, stressing the importance of showing respect towards religious sanctities in a world grappling with diversity and unity.
