Sartaj Aziz Of PML-N Passes Away At 95

Former federal finance minister and prominent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Sartaj Aziz, passed away on Tuesday, marking the end of a life dedicated to public service and shaping the economic landscape of Pakistan.

Born on February 7, 1929, in Nowshehra, Aziz played a crucial role in the Pakistan Movement and later joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1950. He held significant positions in the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Commission, contributing to the formulation of economic policies that guided Pakistan through pivotal periods in its history.

Aziz’s educational background included a master’s degree in economics from Harvard University, reflecting his commitment to academic excellence. His professional journey saw him serving as the joint secretary of the Planning Commission and as a member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1999.

Throughout his career, Aziz took on diverse roles, serving as the finance minister, state minister for agriculture, and later as the advisor to the prime minister on national security and foreign affairs. His appointment as an advisor followed the victory of Nawaz Sharif in the 2013 general elections, marking Sharif’s third term as the prime minister of Pakistan.

PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal acknowledged Aziz as a veteran of the Pakistan movement and a “great asset” to the nation. Iqbal expressed deep sorrow at Aziz’s passing, emphasizing that his contributions to the nation would be remembered with gratitude.

President Dr Arif Alvi also conveyed his condolences to Aziz’s family, recognizing the loss of a seasoned politician and statesman. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar praised Aziz as an “experienced politician” and an invaluable asset to the nation.

Interim Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani expressed profound grief over Aziz’s death, describing him as a “thorough gentleman” and an iconic figure who served Pakistan selflessly with dedication and integrity.

Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi paid tribute to Aziz, highlighting his leadership role in the development of Pakistan and his significant contributions to resolving the country’s economic challenges. Former information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb lauded Aziz’s immeasurable contributions to Pakistan and commended his exemplary commitment to the PML-N.

Former ambassador to the UN Maleeha Lodhi acknowledged Aziz’s distinguished service to the country in various capacities. His multifaceted career, marked by dedication, intellect, and kindness, left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
