A left index finger injury has dealt a significant blow to Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, forcing him to withdraw from the Cricket World Cup 2023.
This unfortunate injury occurred during Bangladesh’s penultimate league stage match against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6, 2023. Shakib exhibited remarkable resilience while at the crease, scoring an impressive 82 runs from 65 balls, contributing to his team’s victory against the Sri Lankans.

Following the game, an X-ray examination confirmed the presence of a fracture, sealing Shakib’s unavailability for Bangladesh’s last match of the tournament, scheduled against Australia in Pune on November 11.
National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan provided further insights into the injury, stating, “Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. An emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game revealed the fracture in the left PIP joint. The recovery process is estimated to take three to four weeks, and Shakib will return to Bangladesh today to commence his rehabilitation.”
