Azhar Mahmood Appointed Interim Head Coach of Pakistan's Test Team

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the interim head coach of the national men’s red-ball cricket team. The announcement came on Monday, with the board confirming that Mahmood will serve in the role until his short-term contract expires.

Mahmood’s promotion comes after his previous tenure as assistant head coach, a role that provided him with strong familiarity with the current squad. The PCB stated that his appointment is based on performance, player rapport, and a solid grasp of the team’s internal dynamics.

“Azhar Mahmood’s presence will be valuable given his vast international and coaching experience,” the PCB noted in its official release. His background includes 21 Test matches and 143 ODIs for Pakistan, along with multiple coaching roles, including a successful stint as the national team’s bowling coach and experience in global T20 leagues.

While Mahmood’s current role is temporary, PCB insiders have indicated that a decision on a long-term red-ball head coach will be taken after the ongoing evaluation process concludes.
