Matthew Kuhnemann to Miss Sheffield Shield Match for Bowling Action Test

Matthew Kuhnemann

Australia spin bowler Matthew Kuhnemann will miss Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield match against South Australia following concerns over his bowling action. The left-arm spinner was reported for a suspected illegal action after his impressive performance during Australia’s 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka, where he took 16 wickets.

Originally scheduled to play in the Shield match starting Tuesday, Kuhnemann has been ruled out due to a long-standing thumb injury on his non-bowling hand. The injury occurred during his stint with Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League and was carried through the Sri Lanka series.

Kuhnemann’s absence paves the way for testing of his action by ICC officials at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. The case has stirred debate due to the 28-year-old’s clean record in over 100 professional matches since 2017.

Tasmania captain Jordan Silk and Steve Smith, who captained Australia during the Sri Lanka series, expressed confidence in Kuhnemann’s eventual clearance, with Silk offering his full support to the bowler.
