Supreme Court Commences Hearing On PTI's Request For Fair Election Conditions

Supreme Court commenced the hearing on the petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alleging the violation of the court’s orders regarding a level playing field for all political parties. The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP)-led bench resumed the proceedings, and the live broadcast is available on the Supreme Court’s website and YouTube channel.

PTI’s counsel, Latif Khosa, presented arguments on behalf of Advocate Shoaib Shaheen, who filed the appeal. In the previous hearing, the court issued notices to Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP), chief secretary, and advocate general, seeking their responses to the party’s claims of harassment against its candidates and leaders.

In response to the court’s directive on December 22, the Election Commission (ECP) met with a PTI delegation and assured them of addressing their concerns leading up to the national elections. Subsequently, PTI filed another petition, requesting contempt of court proceedings against the ECP, alleging the electoral body’s failure to ensure a fair playing field.

The ECP rejected PTI’s accusations, stating that a meeting had taken place with the PTI delegation, and their concerns were addressed, assuring a fair playing field for all parties and candidates without discrimination. The ECP emphasized that it had issued instructions to address PTI’s complaints to relevant authorities, and actions were taken on all 33 complaints made by PTI until December 26, 2023. The ECP’s special secretary urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the contempt petition with a penalty.
