Supreme Court Considers PTI Pleas For 'Bat' Symbol In Elections 2024

Islamabad – The Supreme Court of Pakistan is poised to address the pleas filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) today, as the erstwhile ruling party seeks judicial intervention to reclaim its electoral symbol for the upcoming 2024 elections.

A three-member panel, presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, alongside Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Musarrat Hilali, is scheduled to examine the case pertaining to the electoral symbol of Imran Khan’s political party.

The beleaguered PTI approached the apex court after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) revoked the party’s iconic election symbol, citing issues within the intra-party election process. PTI, aggrieved by this decision, has contested it in the Supreme Court, while a parallel case is simultaneously unfolding in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

In the ongoing proceedings at the Peshawar High Court, PTI’s legal representative argued that the electoral oversight body overstepped its jurisdiction by annulling PTI’s intra-party election results and withdrawing the bat symbol. The counsel contended that the ECP had initially validated the intra-party election.

In response, the lawyer representing the ECP asserted that the commission possessed the authority to guarantee transparent elections. If any irregularities were detected, the ECP maintained the right to declare the intra-party elections null and void.

Following these legal arguments, the court adjourned the hearing until the following day at 9 am, indicating that further deliberations and legal considerations were required before reaching a decision. The complexity of the case and its potential implications for PTI’s participation in the upcoming elections underscore the significance of the legal proceedings taking place in both the Supreme Court and the Peshawar High Court. The outcome of these hearings is eagerly awaited as they will determine whether PTI can regain its cherished bat symbol and participate in the electoral process with the symbol that has become synonymous with the party.
