T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa Triumphs Over Nepal In A Thrilling Encounter

Chasing a target of 116 runs against South Africa, Nepal came agonizingly close to their first victory over a full-member nation. In the final over of the group stage match, needing eight runs to win, they narrowed the chase to the final ball, needing just two runs for victory.

As they ran for a bye to level the scores, Quinton de Kock’s throw hit batter Gulsan Jha and landed in the hands of South Africa’s Klaasen, who completed the run-out with Jha a few metres outside the crease. This resulted in a heartbreaking loss for the young Nepal team.

Nepal looked strong in their chase of the modest target, but Tabraiz Shamsi’s superb 18th over, where he took two wickets including set batter Aasif Sheikh (42 runs), brought the Proteas back into the game. Thanks to this win, South Africa advanced to the Super 8 stage undefeated.

On paper, South African batters scored their highest total of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday. However, in the first innings of the T20 World Cup group stage clash, Nepal’s bowlers contained South Africa’s scoring. Bowlers Kushal Bhurtel (4/19) and Dipendra Singh Airee (3/21) took crucial wickets, while Sandeep Lamichhane (0/18) and Sompal Kami (0/6) restricted the scoring, causing the Proteas to slump to 115/7 in their 20 overs. Nepal had won the toss and opted to bowl first in this Group D encounter.
