Challenges Arise in Pakistan Firewall Installation Amid Rapid Technological Advancements

Pakistan’s firewall upgrade project is advancing rapidly, focusing on enhancing both local and international network security. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed that significant components of the new firewall will be installed at key gateways.

In response to user complaints about slow internet speeds, the PTA has instructed that the installation work be carried out during off-peak hours to reduce disruptions. This strategy is intended to minimize the impact on users while the upgrades are underway.

The PTA has mandated a cautious approach for the upgrade, directing its technical team to conduct large-scale trials only after comprehensive limited-scale testing. This careful methodology aims to ensure system stability before the full deployment of the new firewall.

However, the project is encountering some challenges. Outdated equipment from telecom companies has complicated the integration of the new firewall technology. Compatibility issues between the old equipment and the new firewall have led to technical difficulties.

PTA sources have recognized these issues as typical for first-time installations of this scale. They have assured that these challenges will be addressed as the project progresses. Additionally, configuration problems have emerged due to the involvement of devices from different manufacturers, further complicating the upgrade.

Despite these hurdles, the PTA remains dedicated to completing the firewall upgrade. Once fully operational, the new system is expected to significantly enhance Pakistan’s cybersecurity infrastructure.
