The voice feature of ChatGPT is now available to all users free of charge, as announced by OpenAI on X (formerly Twitter). Users can click the headphones icon to engage in voice conversations with ChatGPT on the mobile app and receive audible responses. Originally introduced in September, the voice and image prompting capability was initially limited to paying users but has now been expanded to include all users.

This launch comes amid internal challenges at OpenAI, including the abrupt removal and subsequent return of CEO Sam Altman. The announcement on X playfully alludes to the recent drama within the organization. In a provided example, a user asks ChatGPT how many 16-inch pizzas to order for 778 people, a number similar to OpenAI’s employee count, with many expressing intent to resign unless the entire board steps down.

The previous week witnessed the dismissal of Sam Altman by the board, citing concerns about communication. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella then invited Altman and his team to establish a new division within Microsoft. However, Altman has since returned to OpenAI, and Greg Brockman, the former president who resigned, shared the announcement on X, encouraging users to try the voice feature, noting it “totally changes the ChatGPT experience.” Brockman has also returned to OpenAI, marking a positive turn of events.
