Chinese Scientists Discover Universe’s Highest Energy Gamma-Ray Line

Chinese scientists have detected the universe’s highest-energy gamma-ray line, reaching 37 million electron volts, from a bright gamma-ray burst (GRB). This discovery, reported by the Global Times, was made by researchers from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The gamma-ray line is the highest energy spectral feature ever emitted by celestial objects. Scientists noted that the gamma-ray line changes over time following a power-law function, offering valuable insights into its origins.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are some of the universe’s most energetic events, often resulting from massive star core collapses or the collision of compact stars like neutron stars and black holes.
