Nokia is Suing Amazon and HP on Allegations of Technology Theft

Nokia, the Finnish telecommunications equipment manufacturer, has initiated legal proceedings against Amazon and HP, alleging unauthorized use of a combination of critical patents related to video streaming.

Nokia has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Delaware and has simultaneously launched similar legal actions in Germany, India, the UK, and the European Unified Patent Court.

The company claims that Amazon Prime and Twitch platforms have been utilizing technology covered by Nokia’s patents for video compression, content delivery, content recommendation, and other applications. Furthermore, HP devices have been identified as infringing Nokia’s patented video streaming technology.

Nokia asserts that it offered fair licensing terms to Amazon and HP for the use of its patented technology, but both companies declined these offers. In a blog post, Nokia explained its perspective on the litigation:

“We’ve been in discussions with each of Amazon and HP for a number of years, but sometimes litigation is the only way to respond to companies who choose not to adhere to the rules that are followed and respected by others.”

Nokia, a significant player in research and development, has invested over €140 billion in the past two decades and possesses more than 20,000 patent families across multiple countries. In the previous year alone, Nokia invested €4.5 billion. The company also states that its technology is fundamental to various industries:

“As a result, we hold one of the world’s strongest patent portfolios of connectivity and multimedia technologies – and it is no exaggeration to say that entire industries are powered by these inventions.”
