The federal government has decided to resume the previous administration’s flagship 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Project under the new name ‘Green Pakistan Programme’ in fiscal year 2023-24.
According to reliable sources, the project will cost around Rs. 125 billion, with only Rs. 3.8 billion allocated to the effort in the current fiscal year.
The initiative began in 2015, when Imran Khan, then a provincial politician and ultimately Pakistan’s prime minister, supported a programme dubbed the “Billion Tree Tsunami.” The campaign met its provincial goals in 2018 and was a success. In 2019, federal officials expanded the programme nationwide with a new objective of 10 billion trees, dubbed the “Ten Billion Tree Tsunami.”

In addition, if re-elected, the former government promised to plant 3.2 billion trees by 2023, with a long-term goal of crossing 10 billion trees by 2028. The coalition government has decided to keep the project going under a different name.
