Using WhatsApp Offline: Is it Possible Without Internet?

WhatsApp’s New Offline Access Feature

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging service owned by Meta, now allows users to access the platform without an active internet connection. This new feature is paired with proxy technology, enabling connections through servers set up by volunteers and organizations promoting free speech globally.

Proxy Technology for Offline Access

This development addresses internet blackouts, such as those experienced in regions like Iran, where connectivity disruptions have hindered communication with loved ones. WhatsApp aims to offer a reliable solution for users in areas with limited or no internet access.

Privacy and Security Assured

WhatsApp assures users that privacy remains intact when using proxy servers. The company states, “Connecting through a proxy preserves WhatsApp’s high level of privacy and security. Your messages will still be encrypted end-to-end, ensuring that they remain between you and the person you’re communicating with, and are not visible to anyone in between, including proxy servers, WhatsApp, and Meta.”

Addressing Internet Outages

WhatsApp hopes to avoid internet outages in 2024, as such disruptions hinder human rights and critical assistance. If outages persist, the proxy solution aims to provide secure and dependable communication.

How to Connect to Proxy Servers

Android Users:

  1. Ensure WhatsApp is updated.
  2. Go to “More options” > “Settings” from the Chats menu.
  3. Select Proxy under Storage and Data.
  4. Choose Use Proxy.
  5. Enter the proxy address and select Set Proxy.
  6. Click Save. A checkmark indicates a successful connection. If blocked, enter a new proxy address by deleting the blocked one.

iPhone Users:

  1. Ensure WhatsApp is updated.
  2. Go to WhatsApp Settings.
  3. Select Proxy under Storage and Data.
  4. Choose Use Proxy.
  5. Enter the proxy address and select Save. A checkmark confirms a successful connection.

Important Note: Using a third-party proxy will share your IP address with the provider. WhatsApp does not provide third-party proxies.

A Step Forward in Connectivity

With over 2 billion users, WhatsApp’s proxy support ensures global connectivity even during internet outages. This initiative reflects WhatsApp’s commitment to maintaining communication across the globe, particularly in regions where free speech and connectivity are challenged.
