WhatsApp to End Support for Older Smartphones in 2025

WhatsApp has announced that it will stop working on older smartphones starting January 1, 2025, due to updates in its compatibility with operating systems. The popular messaging app will no longer support Android devices running KitKat (version 4.4) or older, impacting users who have not upgraded to a more recent OS version.

Owners of outdated smartphones will need to either upgrade their devices or risk losing access to WhatsApp altogether. While some may still have the option to update their phones, many older models no longer receive official updates from manufacturers. Attempts to upgrade through unofficial methods carry risks, such as voiding warranties or damaging the device.

Several popular Android models are affected by this change, including the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), HTC One X, and the Sony Xperia Z. In addition, from May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1, affecting models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which are limited to iOS 12.5.7.

These updates will apply to both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, as the platform aims to maintain its security standards and functionality on modern devices. Users with outdated phones will need to make the switch to newer models or operating systems to continue using the app without disruption.
