Jose Paulino Gomes, who was born in 1895 and held the title of the world’s oldest man, passed away at the impressive age of 127, only seven days before his 128th birthday. Local media reported that he died on July 28 at his residence in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He leaves behind a large and loving family, including seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Until four years ago, it was reported that Jose was still actively riding horses. He witnessed many significant historical events, being born before Queen Victoria’s death, the Wright brothers’ first flight, and the discovery of X-rays. Throughout his life, he experienced both World Wars and three global pandemics.

Jose’s profession was as an animal tamer, a testament to his adventurous and active life. While the Guinness World Records currently recognizes Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera as the official record holder for the world’s oldest person at 115 years old, there are conflicting claims regarding Paulino Gomes’s age. Some previous records suggest that French woman Jeanne Calment lived to be 122 before passing away in 1997.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Jose Paulino Gomes’s age will be officially reviewed and verified by Guinness World Records.
