Tonight, an additional 540 Pakistani students will be flown back from Bishkek

Islamabad – Pakistani authorities have arranged special flights to repatriate 540 Pakistani students stranded in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, following mob attacks. The Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar announced this during a press conference on Sunday.

Initial Repatriation Efforts

Late on Saturday, the first batch of 130 students arrived safely at Lahore airport. On Sunday, the remaining 540 students are scheduled to return home on three special flights. Two additional flights are planned for Monday to complete the repatriation process.

Government’s Response

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been actively involved in coordinating the evacuation efforts. He held a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Hasan Ali Zaigham, instructing him to arrange the special flights and ensure the safety and well-being of the students. The Pakistani government will cover all repatriation expenses.

Incident Background

The violence in Bishkek was triggered by an altercation on May 13 involving Egyptian students, which escalated into widespread attacks affecting foreign students, including Pakistanis. Five Pakistani students were injured in the clashes, but initial reports of fatalities were refuted by the Pakistani embassy.

Student Safety and Security

The Pakistani embassy in Bishkek has been active in providing emergency support. It established helplines for students and their families, and students were advised to remain in their hostels and residences for safety

Current Situation

According to the Kyrgyz Deputy Foreign Minister Imangaziev Almaz, the situation has stabilized, and security measures have been enhanced. However, foreign students, including Pakistanis, remain cautious due to the continued presence of aggressive local youths.

Emergency Contacts

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated its Crisis Management Unit and provided contact numbers for urgent assistance. The Pakistani embassy in Bishkek has also issued emergency helpline numbers.

This coordinated effort by the Pakistani government aims to ensure the safety and timely return of its students from Kyrgyzstan amidst the ongoing unrest.
