US and UK Express Concerns Over Transparency of Pakistan's General Elections

The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) have expressed their concerns regarding the allegations of rigging surrounding the February 8 General Elections in Pakistan.

The US State Department commended the millions of Pakistani voters, including women, religious and ethnic minorities, and youth, for participating in the elections. They praised the efforts of poll workers, civil society, journalists, and election observers in upholding Pakistan’s democratic institutions. However, they also noted concerns about restrictions on freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, as well as electoral violence, attacks on media workers, and allegations of interference in the electoral process.

The US emphasized the importance of fully investigating claims of interference or fraud. Regardless of the election outcome, the US expressed readiness to work with the next Pakistani government to advance shared interests, support Pakistan’s economy, strengthen democratic institutions, promote human rights, and enhance security cooperation.

Similarly, the UK’s Foreign Secretary acknowledged the close relationship between the UK and Pakistan and commended all those who participated in the elections. However, they expressed serious concerns about the fairness and inclusivity of the elections, highlighting issues such as restrictions on political parties, prevention of some leaders from participation, restrictions on internet access, delays in reporting results, and allegations of irregularities in the counting process. The UK urged Pakistani authorities to uphold fundamental human rights, including free access to information and the rule of law. They emphasized the importance of a civilian government accountable to the people and committed to representing the interests of all citizens and communities. The UK expressed readiness to work with Pakistan’s next government to achieve these goals and collaborate on shared interests.
