Diplomatic sources have revealed that Western capitals are closely monitoring the evolving situation in Pakistan concerning the timing of the elections. There exists a deep-rooted belief that free and fair elections constitute the bedrock of a thriving democracy. The delay has sparked concerns among Western nations, raising apprehensions about the future trajectory of Pakistan’s democratic process.

According to Pakistan’s constitution, elections are required to be held within 90 days following the dissolution of the assemblies. However, during the previous regime, the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approved the new results of the census, introducing complexities to the electoral timeline.

Diplomatic sources acknowledged that a slight delay of a few months could be tolerated due to necessary procedural steps such as delimitation and addressing technical issues. However, should the elections be postponed beyond February of the upcoming year, serious repercussions may loom over Pakistan’s diplomatic relationships.

A diplomatic source emphasized, “To be honest, if the elections are delayed beyond February, it will be extremely difficult for us to maintain the same level of bilateral relations with Pakistan.”

The delay in holding elections could lead Western countries, renowned for their steadfast commitment to democratic principles, to reconsider their collaborative endeavors with Pakistan. It might also cast a shadow over Pakistan’s involvement with international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Western nations not only advocate timely elections but also emphasize the need for a level playing field for all political parties.

Another diplomatic source underscored the significance of recent developments in Pakistan, referencing the media restrictions and crackdowns on certain political factions. The United States envoy, following a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner, conveyed a similar message to the caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaarul Haq Kakar.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has publicly affirmed its commitment to adhere to the electoral schedule, with no intention to delay the elections following the completion of the delimitation process. Nevertheless, the eyes of Western nations remain firmly fixed on Pakistan’s democratic future, as they call for the timely and equitable conduct of elections.

The outcome of this scenario could significantly shape Pakistan’s relationship with Western countries and its global standing as a democratic nation.
