History of World Coconut Day:
The purpose behind observing this holiday is to cast a spotlight on coconuts and acknowledge their significance and multifaceted benefits, both in terms of health and economics. Coconuts are especially revered in the Asian and Pacific regions, with the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) playing a pivotal role in facilitating coconut production.
The charming name “coconut” has an intriguing origin. As depicted in numerous cartoons and children’s illustrations, coconuts often exhibit three indentations on their surface, bearing a resemblance to a human face. In ancient Iberian folklore, the Portuguese and Spanish explorers likened these markings to the bogeyman or a similar mythical entity. The folklore character from their native tales was known as ‘Coco,’ and thus, the term ‘coconut’ was coined.
The coconut’s journey began from India, spreading to the East African coast thanks to Arab sailors, and extending to the west of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, as well as the eastern Pacific, courtesy of Austronesian sailors.
